Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Devin Hester Is Best Left Alone

Devin Hester, Atlanta Falcons, Fantasy Football Waiver Wire

As the Atlanta Falcons dominated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Thursday night, NFL fans and fantasy football owners got to see the re-emergence of Devin Hester. Hester finished the game with once catch for 25 yards, a 20-yard rushing touchdown and a 62-yard punt return touchdown that gave him the all-time record for return touchdowns in a career.

Hester had a productive game in Week 1 as well, with five receptions (on six targets) for 99 yards, and he has at least nine fantasy points (ESPN scoring) in two of three games this season. That may put him on the radar of some fantasy owners, but he’s far from being a must-add without stringing together a few more productive games.

Even with Roddy White (hamstring) out and Harry Douglas (left foot) having to leave the game, Hester still only had one target against Tampa Bay. By comparison, Eric Weems had five targets in the game (four catches for 69 yards) in extended action, so he looks to be first in line for a bigger role if the Falcons were to be without White or Douglas in Week 4 or beyond.

Hester showed what he can do with more opportunities as a wide receiver in the season opener, but he has just one target in each of the last two games and his fantasy value is entirely dependent on big plays. Even with a small spike in his ownership percentage (11 percent in Yahoo! leagues) on the heels of his performance against Tampa Bay, fantasy owners have been slow to buy-in to Hester’s roster worthiness.

So I’m even more comfortable recommending he be left on the waiver wire until further notice, though Hester could be worth adding in the narrow group of very deep leagues that count return yardage.
