Fantasy football owners may be afraid to start Jamaal Charles this week, but they shouldn’t be. It’s scary starting a running back who plays on Monday Night Football when he missed the previous game to injury. Don’t fear because all signs point to Charles being ready to go.

He practiced on Thursday and Friday last week, and took part in pregame warm-ups before Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins. Andy Reid just decided to play it safe. On top of that, the Kansas City Chiefs don’t have to practice until Thursday this week, giving Charles some extra rest.

Fantasy owners also shouldn’t worry about Knile Davis stealing a lot of snaps. He may have put up solid numbers running the ball, but he also dropped his only pass, fumbled twice and failed as a blocker. A more legitimate concern would be that Joe McKnight may steal a few targets in the passing game. Though, there’s another way to look at that.

McKnight’s breakout, along with the emergence of Travis Kelce, should force the New England Patriots to respect the other aspects of Kansas City’s offense. The Chiefs desperately needed to find weapons outside of Charles to keep defenses from zeroing in on him, and over the last two weeks, they’ve done that very well.

Would you like another concern that isn’t really a concern? How about the Patriots defense? On paper, they look good. They are third in the league in total defense, but two of the opposing offenses they’ve faced were the Adrian Peterson-less Minnesota Vikings and the Oakland Raiders. Before those awful offenses, Knowshon Moreno and Lamar Miller of the Dolphins torched the Pats for 193 yards on the ground.

I expect Charles to give the Patriots similar problems. The Chiefs’ offense will be the Patriots toughest test to date. Over the last two weeks, Kansas City has moved the ball extremely well without Charles. With him in the lineup, it should get even better. This is the week Charles rewards the people who drafted him with a big bounce-back performance.

Projection: 160 total yards, two touchdowns.
