Week 5 of the NFL starts this Thursday and that means the season is already a quarter of the way over. This could mean several things for your fantasy football team. You could be in a great spot right now or you could be way down in your league, desperate to find quality fantasy play out of your players. If you are one of the desperate ones, you may want to look at Denard Robinson as a dark horse play this week.
Robinson is always a dark horse because he seems to be a boom or bust player. He has always had blazing speed going back to his college years and can turn any play into a big play. That big play ability makes Robinson appealing to fantasy owners, because he can get them a ton of points on just one play. But this also makes him volatile because if he doesn’t get that big play, he won’t get enough time to get consistent fantasy points. But even that seems to be changing now.
Robinson is still the No.2 running back on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster behind Toby Gerhart, but it’s not looking like a clear cut depth chart right now. Last week, Robinson received nine carries and he got eight the week before. That is only three carries less than he got all of last season. The Jaguars are also starting to throw the ball to Robinson, so he gets a chance to make big plays. This increase in playing time could make Robinson a more consistent fantasy performer.
This week, Robinson will get a crack at the Pittsburgh Steelers which should bode well for him. The Steelers give up a lot of rushing yards per game when their unit is healthy, and they aren’t healthy right now. Ryan Shazier will likely miss another game along with Ike Taylor and Jarvis Jones. That is a lot of speed that will be missing from the defense. The Steelers also gave up the most plays of over 50 yards last season, and since Robinson’s calling card is the big play, he could be in for a big game on Sunday.
Robinson looks like he could be a sneaky play this week. He has big play potential, is getting increased playing time and is playing a susceptible defense. Robinson is going to be an interesting name moving forward, but if you’re desperate and need to shake up your lineup, Robinson could be a nice dark horse play in Week 5.
