Frank Gore Has Huge Fantasy Football Upside In Week 5

Frank Gore Start or Sit Fantasy Football Week 5

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Two weeks ago against the Arizona Cardinals, the San Francisco 49ers did their best to avoid the inconvenient truth, as they only gave Frank Gore six carries, and they paid dearly for their mistake with a nine-point loss. What, or perhaps I should ask who is the inconvenient truth? Gore of course, as he’s properly nicknamed, and since he’s undeniably one of the best running backs in the NFL, if the 49ers use him properly, he’ll excel in fantasy football.

Last week, San Francisco got back to their identity, as Gore converted 24 carries into 119 rushing yards, and he even took the lone pass that he caught 55 yards all the way to the end zone on busted coverage by the Philadelphia Eagles defense. It’s simple. If the 49ers want to physically dominate the opposition, they have to put the ball in Gore’s hands.

The main storyline for Sunday’s contest against the Kansas City Chiefs will be Alex Smith vs. Colin Kaepernick. However, Gore vs. the two-headed RB monster comprised of Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis is the subplot, and it may actually turn out to be the more intriguing story. San Francisco may even want to give rookie RB Carlos Hyde some touches to relieve Gore in a battle that will surely be won on the ground.

Expect the 49ers to limit their turnover-prone quarterback’s passing attempts by running the ball early and often against Kansas City’s safety-first QB.

To all the Gore fantasy owners out there, starting him as an RB2 or at the flex position in Week 5 is a no-brainer against the Chiefs, because 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh, who appears to be losing his team, is in no position to take any silly gambles with the team’s offensive strategy.

In sports, winning usually cures everything, but Harbaugh’s scenario might prove to be a rare case.

Time will tell.
