Over the last two weeks in the NFL, St. Louis Rams QB Austin Davis has displayed his mysterious Austin Powers-like abilities from the fantasy football waiver wire to the benefit of very few. The rookie Davis has powered (corny pun intended) the Rams to two narrow defeats, as they lost to the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4 and Week 5 respectively by a total margin of nine points.
Although the Rams are losing in real life, Davis has performed like a winner in fantasy land as he’s amassed 702 yards and six touchdowns over his last two starts. The problem, however, lies in the strength of the opponents that he’s put up big numbers against. The Cowboys’ secondary is nothing to write home about, and the Eagles are currently ranked 29th overall in the league for yards allowed against the pass.
No wonder why the rookie has completed 65 percent of his passes while passing for 300-plus yards over the last two games.
Surprisingly, Davis did not riddle the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ secondary with his fiery darts in Week 2. As the weeks have progressed, the Bucs’ pass defense has been exposed and they’re currently ranked one spot worse than the Eagles at 30th. So can Davis be expected to thrive against physical defenses like the San Francisco 49ers or the Seattle Seahawks, who happen to be the next two teams the Rams will face in Week 6 and Week 7 respectively?
I wouldn’t bet on it. If you need a QB from the waiver wire in Week 6, take a chance on Kirk Cousins, who is available in approximately two-thirds of all leagues after losing a lot of fans two weeks ago with his nightmare performance against the New York Giants. On Sunday, Cousins will face the pathetic, 31st-ranked pass defense of the Arizona Cardinals; meanwhile, Davis will get tested against the 49ers’ seventh-best pass defense. You do the math.
