Each year, a tight end comes from out of nowhere and becomes a reliable fantasy option for owners in standard and PPR leagues. Last year, Julius Thomas emerged and ultimately became one of the highest scoring tight ends. So far in the young 2014 season, the tight end who has been a great player week in and week out has been Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs.
After years of having Vernon Davis as his tight end, Alex Smith finally has a competent player to man the position in Kelce. The second-year player out of Cincinnati has had a nice season, yet he has still flown under the radar. In five games, Kelce has caught 20 passes for 274 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Something to note is that in the past three weeks, Kelce has caught three straight touchdowns. Against the New England Patriots, Kelce caught nine passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.
While Kelce’s play has been great, it should’ve been expected given the fact that Andy Reid has an affinity for using tight ends in his west coast offense. Back when Reid was with the Philadelphia Eagles, Brent Celek was one of the best tight ends in the league and the main reason was because of the system he played in. Reid uses a system of short passes. That being said, Kelce has plenty of opportunities to catch footballs, which gives him even more value in a PPR league. Don’t forget about his ability to dazzle after the catch as well.
There is a great drop-off from the top tight ends in fantasy, so if he is available in your leagues, claiming Kelce is a smart investment. Smith is having success with Kelce, and he will keep throwing to him until it stops working.
