The New England Patriots’ offense has arrived, and with it brings much fantasy football excitement. Now I can finally start Tom Brady with confidence, knowing he’ll get me at least 20 points each weekend. Rob Gronkowski is returning to his usual must start at the tight end position, and Julian Edelman has been his usual consistent self. But that’s not all the Patriots’ offense has to offer to fantasy football players. In fact, their most promising player is readily available to join your team.
Brandon LaFell signed with the Patriots, hoping to be the deep threat the team has been looking for since Randy Moss was unceremoniously shipped out of town. Through the first three weeks, LaFell was horrible — fantasy wise, and actually playing wise now that I think about it — tallying only four total points.
He was the lone bright spot against the Kansas City Chiefs, with six catches for 119 yards and a touchdown, rewarding his fantasy faithful with 17 points (ESPN scoring). Was that an anomaly? Is LaFell worth a spot on your bench or even, dare I say it, in your starting line up?
Maybe not starting line up yet, but he is certainly worth getting off the waiver wire, especially after his performance yesterday. LaFell handed out another excellent game, scoring twice and having over 90 yards receiving. For those who were gutsy enough to start him, enjoy your 21 points reward. Those in dire need of wide receivers, go get LaFell.
He has proven to have Brady’s confidence, which in this offense means a ton more targets. With both the New York Jets — who have lost their starting three cornerbacks for the year — and the Chicago Bears (we all remember what Aaron Rodgers did to them) next on the schedule, LaFell will have plenty of chances to have big games, and my guess is he will.
