The Washington Redskins are having another poor season, resulting in plenty of deficits. That equals plenty of passing opportunities, making receivers for the Redskins sought after pieces for fantasy football. One of those players happens to be Niles Paul, but he is more useful to the Redskins than your fantasy team currently because he has fallen back down the depth chart.
Paul was having a solid season through the first four games. Starter Jordan Reed was injured once again, placing Paul directly on the TE1 radar. He was averaging 5.25 receptions on seven targets per game for 78.25 yards.
Paul then suffered a concussion against the New York Giants Week 4, and things have come tumbling back to earth for the former wide receiver. He was cleared for the Redskins’ Week 5 contest against the Seattle Seahawks, but he caught only one pass for six yards.
Paul also has to deal with a healthy Reed now, who returned to the lineup Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals and made it through without any problems. Against the Cardinals Reed played 35 of 65 snaps, while Paul received 32, but Reed dominated the box score, being targeted a team high 11 times to Paul’s two. That kind of gap is nothing to sneeze at, as Reed is only going to receive more and more snaps as he is eased back into action after missing four games.
Reed’s injury history is extensive, so it is quite possible that he can go down again and Paul can move back into the starting tight end role for the Redskins. The only way he becomes relevant again is if Reed is to miss time again. But until that happens, Reed is the Redskin tight end to own, not Paul. Paul should not only be benched in fantasy Week 7, but should probably be left on the waiver wire.
