You know you’re desperate when you have to pick up a fantasy football player from the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags and the Oakland Raiders are the worst teams in the NFL, but with the healthy return of Jacksonville’s No. 1 wideout Cecil Shorts III, there’s still hope in fantasy land for you if you really need a wide receiver.
With rookie quarterback Blake Bortles declared the starter for the rest of the season, Shorts should benefit greatly from the rookie’s huge arm and incredible passing accuracy. Bortles is going through a growing pains period right now since he’s on the wrong side of the touchdown-to-interception ratio (4:7), but his 68 percent pass completion stat-line is nothing to sneeze at.
Jacksonville has no running game (ranked dead last in league at 32nd), and not even Storm Johnson could forecast that there are better days ahead after his pathetic 2.1 yards per carry performance against the Tennessee Titans last Sunday. Simply put, the Jaguars’ best bet for success can only come in the form of their passing game, and the instant chemistry between Bortles and Shorts was undeniable in Week 6.
Bortles threw the ball to Shorts 16 times on Sunday, and Shorts successfully grabbed 10 of those passes for 103 yards in yet another loss. If Shorts can avoid the injury bug, which has hindered his success this season, then expect the Bortles-to-Shorts connection to be a thing of fantasy beauty, especially in PPR leagues.
Rookie wideouts Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson haven’t really been that impressive this season, and the former has lost his starting position to Shorts since he’s proven to be the most inconsistent of the bunch. Moreover, young quarterbacks need veteran receivers to aid them in their progression, and this is where Shorts will shine.
If you want to shine in Week 7, claim Shorts off the waiver wire or the free agent pool (if applicable) and plug him into your starting lineup in Week 7 as a WR2 or at the flex position. Jacksonville will probably lose to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, but Shorts will definitely get you the points that you need in your quest for a fantasy victory.
