The Minnesota Vikings are still trying to find a replacement from within for NFL superstar running back Adrian Peterson, and as they bounce back and forth between Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon, fantasy football owners of either of the two RBs are probably going crazy right now.
Asiata leads the Vikings’ backfield in carries (64) and rushing yards (226), but his longest run of the season is only 12 yards and he’s only averaging 3.5 yards per carry. McKinnon, on the other hand, has rushed for 206 yards with just 41 carries, and he’s leading the backfield in yards per carry (5.0). McKinnon has also shown his ability to break the big run by ripping off a season-long, 55-yard run in Week 4 against the Atlanta Falcons.
However, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer has discussed getting Asiata more touches going forward, even though McKinnon has overtaken him as the starting RB at the moment. Yeah, it’s all pretty confusing right? To add to the mayhem, Minnesota will face off against the No. 1-ranked run defense in the NFL in Week 7 when they play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
Vikings rookie QB Teddy Bridgewater got destroyed against a suffocating Detroit Lions defense last week, and he’ll have to operate well in the passing game against Buffalo if Minnesota is going to have any chance at winning the game. Any way you look at it, this is a terrible matchup for McKinnon’s fantasy owners.
If you have McKinnon on your fantasy roster, sit him this week and plug in another RB into your starting lineup. If Benny Cunningham is still a free agent in your league, you’re probably bettered served to pick him up and play him against the Seattle Seahawks. Yes, I know, it’s the Legion of Boom, but Cunningham will provide more boom than bust compared to McKinnon in Week 7 — trust me.
