Fantasy Football Week 7 Projection: Travis Kelce

Travis Kelce Kansas City Chiefs

Sam Sharpe – USA TODAY Sports

Coming into the season as a sleeper after a successful preseason campaign, Travis Kelce has proven to be a great investment — the 10th ranked TE in standard leagues. But as a breakout player, the question from week to week is whether or not he can keep it up. The answer is yes, as he’s one of the most consistent players in the game right now.

Besides hauling in a receiving touchdown in three straight games, he’s also had at least seven fantasy points in each game since Week 2 once he took over as the top TE in for the Kansas City Chiefs. He has averaged about 10 points a game in that span of four games, doing it in various fashions. He doesn’t need to have a mass of targets to be effective, as he proved in Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers with seven points on just three targets, but his stats only increase with a heavier workload. Kelce ranks third among tight ends among ESPN’s consistency ratings — each week being a “start” or a “stud.”

So, the question isn’t whether you should start him, but how much will he produce for your roster. Well, he’s going against the San Diego Chargers, who are more kind to WRs than TEs this season — giving up the third fewest points to tight ends. But the best tight end they’ve defended this season was Scott Chandler. Chandler is certainly a good player, but not at Kelce’s level.

Kelce has also proven formidable against teams allowing few points to tight ends before. In Week 4 against the New England Patriots, who give up the 10th fewest TE points, he had a 15 point outing — his most successful game to date. Take Kelce’s game out of the equation. and they’d be ranked as an even better tight end defending team. So, the concern with the Chargers’ protection scheme against TEs is little to none. He’ll continue to make plays this week, hauling in 50 yards and a score for an 11-point game.
