5 Confusing RB Situations To Beware Of In Fantasy Football

The running back position has been tough this season in fanta. From disappointing first-rounders (at least so far) like Adrian Peterson and LeSean McCoy, to injured starters like Rashad Jennings and Montee Ball, finding every-week automatic starter consistency has been very difficult. They can't all be DeMarco Murray. In desperation of filling that RB slot, you might be tempted to pick someone up. However, beware of these confusing RB situations.

Robinson carried the ball 22 times for 127 yards and a TD in the Jaguars' first win this season. He looked good and is probably the most talented back in the Jaguars' backfield. However, Toby Gerhart was held out of this game and will be returning next week. Also, Jacksonville hadn't previously shown a commitment to Robinson. He might very well emerge as the featured rusher, but he will have to prove he can be that first.

Shane Vereen took advantage of the starting RB slot in the Patriots' backfield to the tune of 11 carries for 43 yards, along with five catches for 71 yards and two TDs. It went as well as Vereen owners could've hoped, but Bill Belichick has been anything but consistent with RBs in the past. Jonas Gray and Brandon Bolden remain as rushing options, and this could very well turn into a "who's hot?" situation from game to game.

The New Orleans Saints continue to epitomize the running back situation you want to stay away from. The return of Mark Ingram, the emergence of Khiry Robinson and the reliability and pass-catching of Pierre Thomas all but ensure the near fact that the Saints will never have a running back you'll feel confident in starting in fantasy, barring injuries. If at all possible, you should stay away from anyone in this backfield.

Branden Oliver looks decent for the San Diego Chargers. Wearing Darren Sproles' old number and with pass-catching abilities to boot, Oliver has solidified a spot in the Chargers' rotation and will receive touches going forward. So what's the problem? Well, the Ryan Mathews' return is imminent, and he is (or was) the starting running back. But, at least for now, with Mathews and Donald Brown still out, Oliver is still valuable.

Tre Mason is emerging as the starting RB for the St. Louis Rams. Zac Stacy looks like the odd man out. Benjamin Cunningham and Tavon Austin are still getting carries, but it looks like the bulk of the work will go to Mason for the remainder of the season. Herein lies the problem: Mason kept coming off the field on passing downs. Whether the problem is pass protection or catching, off the field is not where fantasy points are earned.
