The Jacksonville Jaguars finally have a viable running game much to the credit of overnight fantasy football sensation Denard Robinson. The Jags and the Oakland Raiders were the only teams in the NFL without a win, but after Robinson led them to victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 7, the Raiders are now in a league of their own.
Robinson, or “Shoelace” as he is nicknamed, found his footing early against the 32nd ranked (last place) Browns defense last Sunday and he finished the game with 127 rushing yards and one touchdown. Robinson averaged an astounding 5.8 yards per carry and he racked up more rushing yards in one game than Toby Gerhart had all season (123).
It’s pretty clear who the Jags’ No. 1 running back is now, so expect Gerhart to just serve as a short-yardage back since he’s averaging only 2.6 yards per carry. Gerhart will also relieve Robinson when he’s tired, but that will barely put a dent in Shoelace’s touches from here on out. Storm Johnson also presents no threat to Robinson’s new starting role because his paltry 3.2 yards per carry average isn’t doing him much justice either.
On Sunday, Jacksonville will face the tough run-stopping defense of the Miami Dolphins (ranked 10th against the run). Jaguars rookie QB Blake Bortles will have his work cut out for him in the passing game as well since the Dolphins’ defense is currently ranked third overall against the pass. Bortles is very rough around the edges and he’s really been an interception machine with a league-leading 10 interceptions thrown.
In short, Miami will shut down the pass and the run, so it’s probably best that you sit Robinson in Week 8 and save him for a much softer opponent like the Cincinnati Bengals (ranked 30th against the run) in Week 9.
