Fantasy Football Week 8 Start or Sit: Percy Harvin

Percy Harvin worth a Week 8 Fantasy Football Start

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

Have mercy — there goes Percy. As a Seattle Seahawks player, he came, he saw, he conquered and now, Percy Harvin is off to the Big Apple to test his ego as a new member of the New York Jets. However, if Harvin is on your fantasy football team, it’s probably time to hit the panic button since the Jets are one of the worst passing offenses in the NFL.

With Geno Smith playing at the quarterback position for Gang Green, the Jets have earned the distinction for being the second-worst passing team in the league — just slightly ahead of the Minnesota Vikings. New York likes to keep the ball on the ground as their fifth-ranked overall rushing offense (135 yards per game) indicates, so how is Harvin going to fit into their offensive system?

If you really think about it objectively and you push all of the Russell Wilson rumors to the side, the Seahawks-Harvin experiment was actually a failure because they love to pound the ball with Harvin’s ex-teammate-in-mourning, Marshawn Lynch, who tweeted, “Damn they got my ni***,” when he heard the news of Harvin being jettisoned to the Jets. That’s irony for you.

In Minnesota, Harvin also overstayed his welcome after being locked in a run-heavy offense led by Adrian Peterson, so how does Rex Ryan think he can “serve” Harvin better than his former “butlers.”

The Jets are full of gimmicks and it all started back in 2008 when Brett Favre joined the team, but somehow his teammates became the New York Bretts. The Harvin experiment won’t have the same impact Favre’s impact had since we are comparing a wide receiver to a quarterback, but it will be a failure since Smith’s inconsistency at the QB position is really the key limiting factor in this whole ordeal.

On Sunday, the Jets will play the Buffalo Bills — a legitimate NFC East playoff contender that specializes in stopping the run (ranked fourth). Harvin isn’t even the No. 1 WR on the team, as he will have to take a backseat to Eric Decker, and without having enough time to master New York’s offensive system, don’t expect Harvin to hit the ground running in his first game as a Jet.

Compared to his stellar fantasy numbers in Minnesota, Harvin’s fantasy output this year has been a colossal failure and his fantasy woes will continue in New York. Sit Harvin in Week 8 and if you can even trade him to a die-hard Percy fan in your league for some value, make it happen immediately before your opponent has time to foresee the impending disaster that lies ahead.
