The running back position was loaded full of hot waiver wire pickups for Week 8 in fantasy football. Denard Robinson, Tre Mason and then of course, the two Buffalo Bills running backs in Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown round out the list of coveted names. Given that you probably had to use a top five waiver priority to claim these guys, you owe it to yourself and your team to start any of them and see where it takes you.
Mason represents the highest draft pick (75th overall) the St. Louis Rams have used on a running back since they selected Isaiah Pead 50th overall in 2012. Mason almost has more yards from scrimmage in two games than Pead does in his entire NFL career.
Outside of that, Mason looks way more explosive and versatile than both Benny Cunningham (2013 undrafted FA) and Zac Stacy (2013 fifth-round pick). In the second game he suited up for this season against the Seattle Seahawks, Mason out-touched both of his counterparts and very likely won the starting running back role moving forward.
In the Rams’ Week 7 win over Seattle, Mason compiled 85 yards on the ground over 18 carries and found the end zone once. In Week 8, the Rams will play the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Their defense has given up the sixth-fewest fantasy points to RBs this season. No RB has scored a rushing or receiving touchdown on them yet this season, with only Lamar Miller and Frank Gore being able to surpass 100 yards rushing.
There’s a first for time for everything, and with Austin Davis‘ emergence and ability to move the chains for the Rams, I think there is real opportunity for a Ram ball carrier to get some valuable red zone touches in this game. If you are a Tre Mason owner, you have to believe that he will be the one getting those touches, as he is clearly the cream of the running back crop in St. Louis right now.
