The tight end position in the NFL, particularly in terms of fantasy, has been stuck in this weird area for most of the 2014 season. Whether it’s injuries, a strange role in the team, or whatever else, it’s been hard to fully peg the position outside of the indisputable top guys. That’s what I’m going to try and do here, though, looking at who I think the top 10 are this week for fantasy. (Note: Thursday players have been excluded.)

10. Travis Kelce

Kelce has been relatively reliable for the Chiefs in the passing game, being one of the best tight ends in the NFL at getting yards after the catch. Against a shaky St. Louis pass rush, Alex Smith should be able to get Kelce the ball.

9. Jordan Cameron

It’s no secret at this point that the Browns are going to run the ball over everything in their offense. When they do throw the ball, though, Cameron is going to be one of the top targets. Against a porous Oakland pass defense, that seems like a good mix for a nice day.

8. Dwayne Allen

Allen has been on a bit of a tear as of late as the Colts have continued to be a dominant offense. He’s been a bit touchdown dependent, but Indy is scoring at will and Allen is a big red-zone target for them.

7. Owen Daniels

With Gary Kubiak calling the shots, the Ravens are going to continue to look for the tight end. That’s meant a lot of work for Daniels since he got the job for the injured Dennis Pitta and that shouldn’t stop this week.

6. Jimmy Graham

Graham is the most talented tight end in football, but it’s hard to know what he’s going to be with this shoulder injury. Even slowed down, he’s a touchdown threat, but he’s definitely a risk. Proceed with caution regarding Graham.

5. Jordan Reed

Reed is immensely talented and is just getting integrated back into the Washington offense after an injury. Though Colt McCoy is likely going to be the quarterback, that could mean a lot of short, underneath throws, which means a good amount of work and opportunities for Reed.

4. Delanie Walker

Walker is another player where the quarterback isn’t ideal considering rookie Zach Mettenberger is the starter for the Titans this week. However, he’s a big target in this offense and a rookie trying to make quick throws could be a good sign for Walker.

3. Martellus Bennett

It’s hard to know what Bennett’s role is going to be in the Bears offense from week to week, just like it’s hard to know what the Bears are going to do on offense on any given week. Even with that, he’s obviously talented and can be a reliable threat for a Cutler-led Chicago team.

2. Rob Gronkowski

Tom Brady is back to looking like a Hall-of-Famer and Gronk is back to looking healthy. When you look at those two factors, Gronk could be in for a huge week against a Bears team that doesn’t exactly have the personnel to defend a target like the big tight end.

1. Greg Olsen

Olsen has quietly been the second-best tight end in the league up to this point. He’s Cam Newton’s most reliable and consistent target and he consistently puts up good numbers. Though he’s against Seattle, that could actually mean more work for him as Cam and Carolina look to avoid the corners of the Seahawks.
