Fantasy Football Week 9 Start or Sit: Torrey Smith
For Fantasy Football players, Torrey Smith certainly is a player whose stock rose over the past few seasons. With that, though, there was also a decline in his stock as Steve Smith arrived to the Baltimore Ravens this season, leaving many people worried about his targets and production for this season.
For the majority of the year, those worries have been justified. Through the first five weeks of the season, Smith had no more than three catches in a game, had more than only 50 yards receiving twice, and had scored a touchdown just once. It wasn’t until weeks six and seven that he started to show a little life this year.
Over those two weeks, his reception numbers didn’t increase a great deal as he caught just seven balls over the course of two games. However, what increased his value as a fantasy option was the fact that he combined for 132 yards and three touchdowns over those weeks. That was in stark contrast to his week eight performance, though, where he had zero yard on zero catches.
Smith suffered a head injury this past week that caused him to leave the game early. He’s likely going to have to pass concussion protocol to play in week nine against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which puts fantasy owners in a bit of a bind as it might not be until late this weekend until we know if he’s going to take the field for the Ravens.
However, that shouldn’t even be what we’re talking about when it comes to making the decision of starting or sitting Smith. Even against a shaky Pittsburgh secondary, the production just hasn’t been there for Smith this season regardless of the matchup. It’s not an indictment on his talent, but just on the fact that he’s not been doing what he’s capable of this season in this offense. In the end, sitting Smith this season is an easy call.
