After compiling 1,607 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in 2013, LeSean McCoy entered the 2014 NFL season as the defending rushing champion. Therefore, very high expectations were made for him, in real life and in the world of fantasy football. Many believed that the former Pittsburgh Panther was a virtual lock to duplicate, or come close to duplicating, his numbers from last year. However, the first month of this season couldn’t have been any more underwhelming and underachieving for the Pro Bowl RB. He didn’t eclipse more than 79 rushing yards in any of those first four games and averaged a poor 48 yards per game and 2.7 yards per carry. This is a far cry from his 2013 averages of 5.1 yards per carry and 100 yards per game.
Due to his lackluster performances, many people questioned what was wrong with McCoy. Some felt it was from early nagging injuries, and others felt it was from the absence of stud right tackle Lane Johnson. It was actually a bit of both, with the latter being the more dominant reason. With Johnson back and healthy, McCoy now has access to making certain cutback moves that weren’t available when it was Allen Barbre or Andrew Gardner lining up at the RT spot. This has led to him averaging 107.5 rushing yards per game over the Philadelphia Eagles‘ last four contests. It should serve as no surprise that those four games were ones where Johnson played, and it’s safe to say that the Philadelphia rushing attack is back in business.
Entering their Week 10 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, the Eagles have a great chance to prove how back in business their run game is. Despite Carolina playing much better run defense over the last two weeks, the fact still remains that they are subpar in that area. They are currently ranked 29th in terms of run defense and give up an average of 132 yards and one TD per game to opposing RBs. With the way that McCoy seems back on track, he is a clear-cut Top-5 fantasy RB this weekend. As a matter of fact, the only RB that has a sweeter matchup this weekend is the Chicago Bears‘ Matt Forte against the Green Bay Packers.
With all of that said, McCoy projects to carry the ball between 18-22 times and will easily surpass his current four-game average of 107.5 yards by churning out over 145 yards. Additionally, he is a near guarantee for a rushing TD, and may tack on an additional receiving TD as well. By the time it’s all said and done, McCoy may end Week 10 has the top performing RB and continue to extinguish all of the early season worries surrounding him.
