Fantasy Football 2014: Drop Marques Colston
You would think that being a part of a high-powered offense like the one the New Orleans Saints has would benefit a wide receiver. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case for Marques Colston. Despite proving the doubters wrong year after year, this looks to be the season that Colston-fever is done.
Many fantasy experts say that Colston is too old to produce at this level. He’s continued to ignore them and play like a superstar. This season, at 31 years old, Colston’s numbers are slipping. He has just 28 catches, 444 yards and one touchdown, ranked 51st among wide receivers in ESPN.com standard leagues.
While some of that may have to do with age, speed and everything in between, the other part is how the Saints offense is designed. Drew Brees very rarely locks onto one target throughout the game (unless your name is Jimmy Graham). Brees spreads the ball around very well. He has thrown the ball to 13 different players. At the top of the list are Graham and Brandin Cooks.
To compliment the passing game, the Saints have been able to run the ball effectively over the last few weeks. With Mark Ingram leading the pack and Khiry Robinson and Pierre Thomas coming in relief, the Saints have one of the best all-around offenses in the league.
This kind of inconsistency does not bode well for Colston’s fantasy value. If you are one of the 71.1 percent that own him in ESPN leagues, I would begin to look elsewhere for points. Guys like Martavis Bryant or the two Allens down in Jacksonville will help you in the long run.
Colston will be much better served on the waiver wire.
