Fantasy Football Week 11 Start or Sit: Drew Stanton

Drew Stanton has been “perfect” this season, as in he hasn’t thrown any interceptions this season, lacking big mistakes that would otherwise have him criticized.

He’s stepped in for Carson Palmer multiple times this season with moderate success, and the Arizona Cardinals have only suffered one loss under his signal. Because of the team not falling back when Stanton plays, people are confusing his fantasy performance with his efficiency. He’s not all that effective for fantasy owners from what he’s shown thus far, and in a matchup against the league-best pass defense of the Detroit Lions, I can’t give much recommendation for the backup QB.

What Stanton has going for him is that he’s good at not making critical mistakes. However, he does make mistakes. His completion percentage for the season is just under 50 percent. Those completions are safe ones too. They’re completions that help his offense continue the drive, but they don’t progress the stat line for fantasy owners.

As his stats currently stand, he’s throwing one touchdown every 31 attempts. In other words, he doesn’t find his targets down field too often. Sure, he has had some nice tosses when he subbed for Palmer in his last game, finding John Brown for a 48-yard pass, but that’s the end of it. Maybe it’s a sign of a more aggressive Stanton, but probably not; his average yards per reception stands at about six and half yards.

Stanton’s limited fantasy value has really come from yards and not subtracting points from turnovers, but the Lions defense excels at both of those categories defensively, intercepting every QB besides Aaron Rodgers and Cam Newton and holding six of nine QBs below 250 yards passing.

Before the season began, this matchup seemed like a lackluster filler game, but now it has real playoff implications for the division leading teams. I expect to see the Cardinals continue their conservative offense with Stanton to counter the Lions big-break defense.  There’s potential for a big game for Stanton, but it’s very difficult to say with any certainty,

I’d hold off on him, as much as the Cardinals may look like a great team right now.
