New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston has largely been a non-factor for fantasy football owners so far this season, with 34 receptions for 536 yards and one touchdown in 10 games. But he did have four receptions (on eight targets) for 56 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 11, and while those numbers are not outstanding they represent his four-week highs in yardage and targets. Add in a season-ending thumb injury for rookie wide receiver Brandin Cooks coming out of that game, and Colston may become a primary target for Drew Brees once again.
A Monday night game against the Baltimore Ravens is on the slate for the Saints in Week 12, and it looks like a favorable matchup for the New Orleans passing game. The Ravens enter the week 21st in the league against the pass (251.2 yards per game), and more specifically they’ve allowed the fifth-most fantasy points to wide receivers (24.6 per game; ESPN scoring). Allowing four touchdowns (and 48 fantasy points) to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receivers in Week 9 stands out as a game that would make things look a lot worse than they really are, but Baltimore has still allowed more than 20 fantasy points to the position in seven of their 10 games.
Colston, since he works out of the slot frequently, has been mentioned as a primary beneficiary of Cooks’ absence going forward. The possibility of more targets can only be considered good news, and Colston’s past rapport with Brees should still count for something. But it remains to be seen if that will lead to better production for Colston, and a return to fantasy relevancy.
I’m hesitant to automatically recommend starting Colston based on a favorable matchup, and he is clearly no longer an every week fantasy starter. But those than can deploy him as a WR2 or WR3 can make a modest bet on his upside, and frankly if you can’t (or won’t) start Colston in Week 12 there may not be a more suitable opportunity over the rest of the season.
