If St. Louis Rams running back Tre Mason is still available in your league, go snatch him up now. There is a decent chance that he’ll still be there. His fantasy numbers haven’t exactly been eye-popping, but there is reason to believe some big performances could be right around the corner.
Mason has now leaped over Zac Stacy and Benny Cunningham to become the Rams’ workhorse. The rookie has had at least 18 touches for three weeks in a row now, including 30 last Sunday against the Denver Broncos. The dust has settled in the Rams’ backfield, and Mason has come out on top.
His less-than-exciting fantasy numbers can be explained by a rough road of opposing defenses. The Kansas City Chiefs are the only opposing run defense Mason has a carried against that wasn’t ranked No. 7 or better, and he was only given eight touches against them.
In the four games in which Mason received 18 touches or better, he’s averaged 9.5 fantasy points per game. Those numbers are definitely respectable considering the competition and softer defenses are on the horizon.
This weekend the Rams face a middle of the pack San Diego Chargers’ run defense. The Bolts have allowed 132 yards or more to opposing runners in three of their last four games, with the lone exception coming against the Oakland Raiders‘ league-worst rushing offense.
This will be Mason’s first full load against a defense that isn’t among the NFL’s best. Expect a season-best fantasy performance from the man who has averaged 4.2 yards per carry through a gauntlet. He is at least a solid RB2 this week.
If you own Mason, start him. If you don’t, check if he’s available, pick him up if he is and start him.
