If you thought this would be the typical Wes Welker year when you drafted him then you of all people know that his glory days are well past him at this point in his career. Gone are the days when he would casually haul in 100 receptions to go along with nine or 10 touchdowns in a season. Peyton Manning’s go to options now are clearly Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, and then Welker in that order.
Part of the reason for his decline are his multiple concussions that have cost him a few games this year. And at age 33, he has clearly lost a step and can no longer use his quickness to get the separation he once got from defenders. But there is hope for Welker owners out there this week as both Sanders and Julius Thomas are questionable to play against the Miami Dolphins, so the Denver Broncos may have to make him their secondary option in the passing game.
This will force them to come up with a creative game plan to get him open and possibly create opportunities for him to make plays so they can consistently move the ball. The main issue, however, is that the Dolphins have a solid defense that’s second in the league against the pass. They have ball hawks at the cornerback position with the emerging star Brent Grimes and the solid and cagey veteran Cortland Finnegan that should make life difficult for the Broncos receivers.
And if you add the fact that C.J. Anderson is averaging 5.2 yards per carry in Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball’s absence, the Broncos may actually turn to their ground game to help right the ship and get back on the winning track. So despite the fact that the team is hurting on the offensive end with injuries, this is not the week to hope for a Wes Welker revival. I would sit Welker this week.
