San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick will look to reignite the great 49ers-Seattle Seahawks rivalry of the past this Thursday as the 49ers head up to CenturyLink field.
Unlike last season, however, going up to Seattle and their star-studded secondary isn’t a fantasy death sentence this season. Seattle’s pass defense actually ranks just 18th in the league by DVOA, a downright average number for a team that was so dominant in that area last season. The Seahawks have dominated Kaepernick over the past season, picking him off five times while only allowing two touchdowns and limiting him to a 50 percent completion rate.
That secondary isn’t the same now, however, and Kaepernick is coming off of a rebound performance against the Washington Redskins. Although he only threw a single touchdown and still threw one interception, he completed 69 percent of his passes and threw for more than 250 yards for the first time since Week 7 against the Denver Broncos. Washington’s pass defense is one of the worst in the league, however, and Kaepernick has struggled this season against even average secondary units.
Moreover, he hasn’t been running recently. For a quarterback whose main fantasy advantage is his ability to supplement average passing stats with a bit of rushing, this really hurts Kaepernick’s value. Although he’s averaged 37 rushing yards per game in his four games against Seattle, he hasn’t rushed for more than 24 yards since Week 6 and does not have a rushing touchdown on the year.
Although Seattle isn’t the defensively-dominant team it was last year, Kaepernick’s recent performance will likely mean he won’t take advantage of the Seahawks’ decline, so the 49ers’ passer is not worth starting this week.
