Fantasy Football Week 13 Start or Sit: Jay Cutler

Most fantasy football owners probably don’t realize that Jay Cutler is a top-10 quarterback in ESPN standard leagues through Week 12, but that’s where the Chicago Bears’ signal caller sits heading into a Thanksgiving Day matchup with the Detroit Lions. He has posted at least 16 fantasy points (ESPN scoring) in eight of 11 games thus far, but it’s worth mentioning that two of three games he has not reached that mark have come over the last three weeks.

Can Cutler turn things around a bit against the Lions?

Detroit enters Week 13 allowing just 12.5 fantasy points to per game to quarterbacks (tied for second-fewest in the league, ESPN scoring), but they have allowed multiple passing touchdowns in four of their last five games and over 300 passing yards in back-to-back games.

Cutler set season-lows across the board last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, going 17-for-27 for 130 yards with one touchdown. His fantasy owners certainly expected a lot more in a very favorable matchup, and the Buccaneers are still in the bottom half of the league against quarterbacks even after keeping Cutler in check, so things aren’t looking bright for a rebound in Week 13.

I’m betting on Cutler having to throw the ball quite a bit on Thursday, since the Lions are also very strong against the run (first in the league; 70.7 yards per game). That volume creates the possibility for a notable yardage total, and Cutler’s group of pass catchers is a mismatch for any secondary. It’s also worth noting the game is indoors on the road at Ford Field, so the Chicago passing game will not be limited by any possibility of adverse weather.

Cutler is clear bench material in Week 13 for owners that have an obviously better option, which holds true any week for the most part. But I’m willing to recommend him as a risk/reward low-end QB1, and if your other lineup spots are basically locked-in he is worth rolling the dice on this week.
