Fantasy Football Week 13 Waiver Wire Pickup: WR Brandon LaFell

It’s hard to imagine that the 21st-best fantasy wide receiver is actually a potential waiver wire pickup, but that’s the case with Brandon LaFell. He’s owned in just over 70 percent of leagues, but his value is still confusing to some people in the New England Patriots diverse offense.

After Rob Gronkowski, LaFell has been New England’s most consistent offensive weapon on a week-to-week basis. He has 29 catches over the last four games and two scores. He has scored nine or more fantasy points in three of those four games.

This Sunday, the Patriots will play in what could be a Super Bowl preview against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Both Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers are playing as well as any quarterback in the NFL. With weapons all over the field, the matchup could be a high-scoring affair.

Green Bay’s defense has looked rather pedestrian at times this season, and is allowing about 24 fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers. Their secondary has given up the third-most touchdowns to receivers in the league. Over the last five weeks, Green Bay is actually allowing over 29 fantasy points per game to opposing receivers.

The Patriots’ offense has as much balance as they have had all season long with LeGarrette Blount back in the fold. New England has over 300 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns in the last two games. They will likely try to run the ball on Sunday to open up the passing game and play action.

LaFell has been great on single coverage with his 6-foot-3 frame. He could be in a position for a long reception and a potential score if Brady is forced to throw the ball more than he has the past two games. If LaFell is available in your fantasy league, he’s worth picking up and freeing up room for in your lineup.
