Despite the early-season struggles of the St. Louis Rams, there have rarely been any questions about how dangerous their defense can be. However, the same can’t be said about their offense. Whether it’s dealing with constant and unfortunate injuries to their alleged franchise QB Sam Bradford or dealing with inconsistent play from their WR corps, the Rams have really struggled to solidify their offensive identity, especially since the departure of RB Steven Jackson. However, this doesn’t mean that they don’t have viable fantasy football options on their roster. Many fantasy owners already have guys like Kenny Britt, Jared Cook and Tavon Austin on their rosters. However, a new and promising name has emerged within their receiving corps that players in deep leagues will want to consider moving forward: Stedman Bailey.
In St. Louis’ last game against the San Diego Chargers, Bailey recorded seven catches for 89 yards and a TD. This broke all of his career highs, although that’s not saying much since it’s his second year in the league and his usage last year was non-existent. However, QB Shaun Hill was targeting Bailey early and often as he tied Cook for the most targets in that game with nine. In short, Bailey’s explosion was impressive, and he flashed the same crisp route-running and sure hands that he displayed as a standout player for the West Virginia Mountaineers. However, current fantasy owners of Bailey may want to temper expectations a bit since the Rams have yet to have a weekly leader in receiving in back-to-back weeks.
Over the next month, the Rams gets to face the Oakland Raiders, Washington Redskins, Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants. With the exception of the Cardinals, the other three teams have Pro Football Focus pass coverage grades of minus-27.3, minus-46.2 and minus-19.4, respectively. This bodes well for the Rams’ passing attack in general, and we may see more impressive performances from Bailey during the home stretch of the season. Therefore, if you’re in a deep league with at least 14 teams or more, Bailey is definitely worth making a waiver claim on since he should be able to reproduce numbers close to his performance against the Chargers.
There are far worse waiver wire options out there. So if you’re in dire need of a WR due to an injury or player underachievement, take a chance on Bailey and enjoy the some solid production for the next few weeks.
