If you haven’t already picked up Dan Herron from waivers in the past couple of weeks, I’d advise you to do so and start him right off the bat if you’re in need of a running back this championship weekend. Even if you have a great trio of RBs at your disposal, he’s worth grabbing so your opponent doesn’t have the potential to land him. Because I expect Herron to be a big part of the Indianapolis Colts‘ game plan against the Dallas Cowboys this week.
Since Week 12, Herron has started to emerge as a good running back option for the Colts in the wake of Ahmad Bradshaw‘s season-ending injury — and for fantasy owners as well. He’s been splitting carries with Trent Richardson almost evenly but has the upper hand by a few carries and should continue as his efficiency is much greater.
Herron is coming into this week with a great 5.1 yards per carry and has also been a great receiving asset with nearly 100 yards in the last four weeks filling the void of Bradshaw. Expect his name to be called by the Colts more than Richardson this week as they try to attack the Cowboys’ weakness against the run.
Last week, the Cowboys allowed 18 points to running backs and that was in an away game, where they are surprisingly better than at home this season. At home, they’ve allowed seven touchdowns compared to four on the road, and the only backs to reach over 70 yards rushing are against visiting opponents.
As strange as that may seem, the Cowboys don’t perform at home. You’d have to imagine the Colts recognize this and will use Herron to their advantage. Expect him to reach at least 50 yards with a score this week, and he’s definitely a worthy RB2 or FLEX start.
