Normally in fantasy football IDP leagues, a defensive lineman is one of the lowest scoring players on your entire team, let alone among IDP players. The position is incredibly difficult to predict on a weekly basis, and as a result, it makes owning an elite option that much more gratifying.

However, Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt has completely changed the landscape of IDP formats forever.

Watt finished with 20.5 sacks, which set a record for multiple 20-sack seasons in a player’s career. He was second in the league to Justin Houston of the Kansas City Chiefs (22.0), but Watt is so special because of his intangibles.

As if the sack numbers weren’t enough, Watt has posted identical tackle numbers over the past three seasons (81, 80, 78). He also forced four fumbles, recovered five fumbles, deflected 10 passes and picked off one pass for an 8-yard touchdown this season.

Shockingly, though, Watt also made a contribution on the offensive side of the ball as a tight end. The former Wisconsin standout finished the season with three touchdown catches; a number that matched or bested popular tight ends like Heath Miller (3), Scott Chandler (3), Jared Cook (3), Charles Clay (3), Zach Ertz (3), Vernon Davis (2), Marcedes Lewis (2), Kyle Rudolph (2), Jordan Cameron (2), Jace Amaro (2) and Jordan Reed (0). Watt played tight end at Central Michigan and has quickly transitioned into a both-way fantasy player.

Sure, LB Mike Vrabel caught some touchdowns from QB Tom Brady back in the day and Devin Hester was giving owners WR/CB eligibility for a couple of seasons, but neither were nearly as productive on the defensive side of the ball. Watt is a not only a candidate for the Defensive Play of the Year once again, but he could even walk away with the actual NFL MVP as well, which is a testament t0 how special this 25-year-old really is.

Watt is a pure gem in any fantasy football IDP dynasty league. He has another five-plus years of All-Star numbers and may end up as the best fantasy IDP player ever when it is all said and done.
