Fantasy Football Playoff Challenge: Don’t Draft WR Emmanuel Sanders

In the early part of the 2014 fantasy football season, WR Emmanuel Sanders of the Denver Broncos was unstoppable. He averaged a jaw-dropping 98.1 receiving yards through the first 11 games of the 2014 season, including seven 100-yard games. During the team’s Thursday night game against the San Diego Chargers, Sanders even hauled in nine balls for 120 and three touchdowns.

Sanders was producing like an elite level fantasy wideout for the majority of the season. He fell past the fifth round on draft day, but he was starting to show signs of becoming a legitimate WR2 in all formats.

Shockingly, though, Sanders has started to disappear within this struggling offense. He has only caught two touchdown passes over the past six games, and they both came in a Week 16 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. He also hasn’t eclipsed the 75-yard mark in five consecutive weeks.

The huge drop off in production is extremely concerning from a fantasy standpoint. Sanders is suddenly being targeted after both DeMaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas. Even worse, the high-flying offense has become much more dependent upon the run through C.J. Anderson, which has left even fewer targets per game for the veteran wideout.

Sanders simply isn’t worth grabbing as a wideout for the fantasy football playoff challenge this year. He has become an afterthought in the offense and there are plenty of more reliable options out there, such as T.Y. Hilton or Randall Cobb.
