This week marks the return of Phil Mickelson to the course. He will be a part of the Humana Challenge in La Quinta, CA. Mickelson is coming off a bad year in 2014, but that is behind him. Mickelson has had more control over the distractions in his life and has put a renewed emphasis on his fitness. He has stayed positive, and that will help him rebound in 2015.
Last year, Mickelson’s name was connected to an insider trading investigation regarding stock sells. He was interviewed by FBI agents and constantly asked about it on tour. Mickelson maintained his innocence all along, and he was finally cleared of any accusations. It was one of the biggest stories in golf last year, but Mickelson has now distanced himself from the issue.
This year’s distraction is something that Mickelson wanted. He has helped his brother Tim with the Arizona State University golf team. He went back to a familiar place and removed himself from the talk of his poor season to focus on 2015. Reading any interview done my Mickelson or news relayed by golf analysts makes it clear that Lefty is motivated and in a positive state of mind.
His confidence will improve, which will translate to his putting getting better. He was 84th last year in putts seven to 20 feet away from the hole.
Mickelson has also been hitting the gym hard since late October. Golf Channel’s Tim Rosaforte reports that the weight loss has paid off. Mickelson’s swing is up to 175 mph, which is seven to 10 mph faster than last year. That means the ball is carrying 10-15 yards more. Rostafore also reports that Mickelson has bought into the idea of patience more this year than any other. He is not expecting to be -8 after 36 holes just because he feels good.
Mickelson will turn 45 this year and seems focused. Mentally and physically, he is ready to play his aggressive style with the irons. Mickelson likes to play on the west coast, so you may not want to wait too long to get him into your lineup. Lefty is poised for a big comeback in 2015.
