Barring something unforeseen over the next few days that takes him out of action, Tiger Woods will make his 2015 tournament debut this coming weekend at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, an event he has not participated in since 2001. To put in perspective how long ago that was, Woods had not yet completed the “Tiger Slam” by winning four straight majors, which he would accomplish by winning the 2001 Masters.

Woods has participated in this week’s event three times, with two top-10 finishes (third in 1999 and fifth in 2001) and a top-20 finish (tied for 18th in 1997) on his tournament resume. He is obviously a much different player now than he was when the fans that surround TPC Scottsdale saw him last, with a litany of physical issues and remodeled swings limiting him and taking away the consistency of his play at various points in recent years.

Another new swing coach adds more uncertainty to the equation for Woods, no matter how you want to view the importance of a swing coach to a professional golfer as accomplished as he is. But I still think Woods absolutely belongs in fantasy golf lineups for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Woods is virtually unrivaled as a risk/reward fantasy option this week, since a first-round withdrawal due to injury, a first place finish on Sunday and everything in between can’t be ruled out. I’m also fairly certain he’ll be expensive in any salary-based game, which adds to the risk attached to him. But the ability to choose a foursome of golfers helps minimize the downside of deploying Woods, and as a pure upside play I’m using him in my own Yahoo! fantasy golf lineup this week.
