Since being traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder by the Cleveland Cavaliers early this month, guard Dion Waiters has continued to come off the bench and he is averaging 11.5 points per game (10 games). That includes six double-figure scoring games, and at least eight points in eight of those 10 contests.
Should fantasy basketball owners who are looking to bolster their roster depth consider adding Waiters?
Waiters is averaging 10.7 points per game overall this season, but outside of that he barely dents the stat sheet (2.1 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game). Since he’s been with the Thunder, an uptick in his rebounds per game (2.1 per game; 1.7 per game with the Cavaliers) has been offset by a drop in assists (1.7 per game; 2.2 per game with Cleveland).
Waiters is not a good shooter (25.8 percent from beyond the arc this season), but he’s been particularly abysmal lately (17-for-56 from the floor and 3-for-18 on three-pointers over the last five games). With such bad efficiency, and even though he needs a lot of shots to put up points even in a best-case scenario, Waiters’ bad shooting over the last handful of games has basically eliminated any fantasy value he has and made him virtually impossible to rely on in daily contests.
I can make a case for considering Waiters in daily contests when he has a favorable-looking matchup, such as Wednesday night against the New York Knicks. But with no notable contribution likely to come in any category other than points, Waiters is only worthy of a roster spot in the very deepest season-long fantasy leagues.
