The Cleveland Cavaliers did not want to wait until the trade deadline to make a big addition to their roster. On Jan. 7, it was announced that the Cavaliers and Denver Nuggets agreed to a trade that would send Timofey Mozgov to Cleveland. The addition of Mozgov wasn’t cheap, but now that he is in Cleveland, he is surrounded by elite talent and the opportunity to put up some nice numbers.
Before joining up with the Cavaliers, Mozgov had a nice thing going in Denver. In December, the 7-foot-1 Russian center was averaging a solid 8.1 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game in 26.6 minutes. Now that he is in Cleveland, Mozgov is still seeing the same amount of minutes and steady production.
One of the only downsides with Mozgov on the Cavaliers is the amount of talent and depth they have on their roster. When Mozgov was with the Nuggets, he was the clear-cut No. 1 option at center, with only a rookie center behind him. Now, he will still get his minutes, but Tristan Thompson is a great player who will also fight for his minutes. Along with that, Mozgov also has the battle LeBron James and Kevin Love for extra touches.
Despite some of the negatives, Mozgov is playing on a team that is more talented than his old team and because of that, his teammates should open up the court for him. When it comes to Mozgov’s fantasy value moving forward, consider him a high-end No. 2 center. With nearly a double-double average per game and the ability to block some shots, Mozgov remains a good play in all fantasy leagues.
There are going to be some growing pains with Mozgov as he continues to fit in with his new team, but he is a talented big man who is worthy of an addition to your team, if he is still available on the waiver wire.
