New Orleans Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday has been sidelined since suffering a right leg injury on Jan. 12, and after missing the last 16 games with what was diagnosed as a stress reaction he is still without a definite timetable for a return. But Pelicans coach Monty Williams expressed some optimism about Holiday’s health last week, and the All-Star break may help him not miss too many more games.

It’s worth noting that Holiday missed the final 48 games of the 2013-14 season with an injury to same leg, but this latest injury is considered unrelated to last year’s shin issue. With a return to the floor possibly coming soon, Holiday could become a factor for fantasy basketball owners at the most important time of the season.

Holiday was productive prior to being sidelined over a month ago, averaging 15.2 points, 7.1 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game over 37 games played. In fantasy leagues that use shooting percentages as categories he has also been an asset, making 85 percent of his free throws, more than 36 percent of his three-pointers and over 44 percent of his field goal attempts overall.

Some fantasy owners may have been unable to hang onto Holiday over the last few weeks, due mostly to his outlook being so unclear. But with some optimism regarding his return to action, even if we shouldn’t expect to hear anything else from his coach, Holiday can absolutely be re-added in leagues where he is available right now.

Adding a player who can make a real difference at this stage of the season can feel like a trade acquisition, and Holiday fits that bill as long as he is able to suit up soon. Fantasy owners that are still engaged right now should check the waiver wire for Holiday’s name, and not hesitate to add him if there is any hint of a need to do so.
