Los Angeles Clippers guard J.J. Redick did not do well in the Three-Point Shooting contest during All-Star Weekend, but that should not lead to anyone overlooking that he is in the top-10 of league in three-point percentage (43.6 percent) and he is ninth in the league in three-pointers made (119) right now.
Redick has been bothered by back issues recently, but he averaged 17.5 points per game over the final two games before the All-Star break, while making making half of his field goal attempts (14-for-28) and going 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. Should fantasy basketball owners be paying attention to the Duke product?
The Clippers could make a last-minute trade for a shooting guard before Thursday’s deadline, but as of now Redick won’t be moved into a secondary role as long as he is healthy. Even if his minutes were to be reduced a bit in order to keep him healthy, Redick should still have the freedom to shoot plenty when he is on the floor.
Redick’s fantasy value is tied to his perimeter shooting and point production, since he offers virtually nothing in other categories (1.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game this season). Back spasms are never predictable, and there will be the risk of a occasional missed game or two until further notice, but Redick can help any fantasy owner that is seeking a boost in three-pointers as the season winds down.
All things considered Redick is a very low-risk waiver wire addition for fantasy owners, with solid upside in one or two categories, and he will surely continue to be very affordable in daily contests.
