The Chicago Bulls announced on Tuesday that guard Derrick Rose will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, and though the team has not made an official announcement yet he is likely out for the season. Filling the void left by Rose won’t be easy for the Bulls, and his fantasy basketball owners will be left searching through scraps on the waiver wire at this late point in the season.

Aaron Brooks and Kirk Hinrich are likely to be the first in line for more playing time in Rose’s absence. Hinrich is expected to return to action Wednesday night against the Charlotte Hornets, after missing five of the last six games a toe issue and then an illness, but I think he won’t be particularly helpful to fantasy owners down the stretch of the season.

Brooks has not done much in February, averaging just 5.9 points, 1.9 assists and 1.6 rebounds per game while making just 30 percent of his shots from the floor over eight games (17.6 minutes per game). His recent struggles followed an excellent run in January, where Brooks averaged 12.5 points per game (13 double-figure scoring games) along with being a marksman from three-point range during the month (50.7 percent).

Rose’s official recovery timetable after surgery will shed more light, with a couple different options to fix his meniscus depending on exactly where the injury is, and as of now there is a faint possibility he plays again before the regular season ends. Rose being out for a few weeks or the rest of the season doesn’t make much of a difference for Brooks’ fantasy value, since he is worth adding in deep leagues based purely on being in line for more playing time going forward.
