2015 Fantasy Baseball Sleeper Candidate: Marcell Ozuna

The Miami Marlins are a team that’s fast on the rise, but since the average fantasy baseball fan doesn’t have the time to know all 30 teams’ rosters, the Marlins are almost always undervalued and overlooked due to their rebuilding days. Thus, they can provide you tremendous value, particularly during the draft.

Last season, almost no one had heard of OF Marcell Ozuna, but he started to turn some heads with his strong play by the end of April. Personally, I was able to pick him up on the waiver wire and then include him in a trade for a piece I really needed, but unfortunately that luxury won’t be available this season. However, he can still provide you stellar value in your draft.

In 2014, Ozuna made over 600 plate appearances. He batted .269 with 23 HRs and 85 RBIs. Adding his 23 HRs,with 26 doubles and five triples gives him a total of 54 extra-base hits, which is more than adequate. His OBP left something to be desired at .312, but it will not bog you down in leagues that count such statistics.

While Ozuna is by no means a must-draft player except in NL-only leagues. He carries big-time appeal considering he’s only currently ranked as the 36th OF overall. At first glance, this seems shortsighted. Neither Marlins teammate Christian Yelich (24th) nor J.D. Martinez of the Detroit Tigers (31th) will finish the 2015 campaign with as much production for fantasy purposes. You can write it down right now.
