Hockey Card Collecting Has Come A Long, Long Way
Remember the the thrill of opening a brand new pack of hockey cards when you were a kid? Do you recall the rush of excitement as you eagerly tore the wrapper off? Do you reminisce about sifting through stacks of mint condition cardboard? All of this in anticipation of finding that one card that would make it all worth while. For me it was finding all 3 cards in the 1990-91 Wayne Gretzky Upper Deck hologram card set. You know I never did complete the set. Don’t feel too bad for me though; I once found a Martin Brodeur card with a barely recognizable sliver of a game worn jersey in it that I still own to this day.
Ah, those were the days…But, my oh my how things have changed.
On Sept. 14, Panini America released the 2010-11 Dominion Hockey hockey card series and with it one lucky hockey fans ultimate dream will be realized. Yes, that’s right one collector will actually win their very own Stanley Cup. Panini America randomly inserted one redemption card for a rare 13 inch tall mini-Stanley Cup inside one of it’s packs. We are not talking some cheap knock off replica; We are talking about a unique piece of hockey history.
The miniature Cup once belonged to a player from the 1978-79 Stanley Cup Champion Montreal Canadiens. Each member of the team received one in recognition of the feat. According to Panini America the one of a kind giveaway was purchased at an auction earlier this year for more than $4,000. Finding this little gem would be hobby card collectings version of finding Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket!
Hold your horse, before you steal your mom’s car keys and head out to your local card shop to pick yourself up a box, keep in mind a single pack of 8 cards will set you back $350. That’s a small price to pay to own a piece of NHL history, right? The good news is the bloated price does afford the collector the opportunity to find other goodies stashed in the pack. But, for that price anything less than finding the Stanley Cup would be a huge bust.
If your not convinced just ask Ray Bourque he had to play in the NHL for 23 years to finally win a Stanley Cup for himself. All you need to do is find the right pack to tear open. Good Luck.
