Toronto Maple Leafs Fire Ron Wilson, Replace Him With Randy Carlyle
Fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs finally got their wish on Friday, as Ron Wilson was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Original Six franchise
The Leafs struggled through February, posting the league’s worst record for the month. After hanging around in contention for most of the season, that month has seen Toronto fall out of the top eight, and they’ll have a tough time getting back in.
For most of the month, fans had been calling for Wilson’s job, and it finally came. Since being hired in 2008, Wilson posted a record of 130-135-45 as head coach.
Brian Burke wasted no time replacing Wilson, bringing in old friend Randy Carlyle to replace him. Carlyle has also been fired this season, as the Anaheim Ducks fired him earlier this season before replacing him with coach Bruce Boudreau.
Carlyle comes in already familiar with Burke, as the two were together in Anaheim in 2007, when the Ducks won the Stanley Cup.
It’s now on Carlyle to bring some success to a franchise that hasn’t seen a Stanley Cup win since 1967. A playoff first would be a nice place to start, as the Leafs haven’t even seen one of those since 2004. He’ll have his work cut out for him, as the Leafs currently sit five points out of that last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
