Mike Milbury Continues To Rant And Rave; When Will It Cost Him?
There are plenty of sports “analysts” out there who you wonder how they have a job. The President of the Tim Tebow Fan Club, Skip Bayless, being one of them, and Colin “I Hate All Fans” Cowherd are a couple of them.
Though they obviously have zero affiliation with ESPN, where those two hail from, the National Hockey League is not without their own goons in the studio. In fact, Mike Milbury likely trumps them both.
First, a little bit of history.
Mike Milbury is now more known for his career in the front office, rather than anything he did as a player for the Boston Bruins. His failed tenure as general manager of the New York Islanders included trading away names like Roberto Luongo, Zdeno Chara, and Olli Jokinen, among others, while passing over both Dany Heatley and Marian Gaborik in the 2000 draft, in favor of goaltender Rick DiPietro.
Now he makes a living as an analyst for NESN, while making regular appearances in the studio for the newly re-branded NBC Sports Network. And it’s been a steady train wreck the entire time.
Milbury is known for his controversial comments, and his incessant bickering with Jeremy Roenick. JR has a way of getting under Milbury’s skin in a way that makes it enjoyable for viewers of all ages.
He rarely actually takes the role of an analyst. Even Pierre McGuire, as intolerable as he can be, does his job. Milbury sits in the studio and complains the entire time about a specific player on the ice, like Alex Ovechkin, or gets into a pissing contest with Roenick.
His latest comments just continue to demonstrate that everything that flows out of Milbury’s pie hole is complete nonsense.
The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins, as they often do, had a few incidents towards the end of Philly’s 6-4 win on Sunday, which included Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette getting into a heated argument with Pittsburgh assistant Tony Granato. Missing from the spat between the two was the Pens’ head man, Dan Bylsma.
Well, it turns out that Milbury didn’t like that very much. In a radio interview with a station in Philadelphia, Milbury said that he thought Bylsma should have “taken off his skirt” and gone over to confront Laviolette, rather than let Granato handle it. In that same interview, Milbury went on to talk about that “little punk”, Sidney Crosby:
“Little goody two shoes [Crosby] goes into the corner and gives a shot to [Brayden] Schenn. Schenn was late to the party, he should have turned around and drilled him right away, but I guess better late than never. So you know, Crosby gets cross-checked, big whoop. He said after he came back from his 35th concussion, ‘I’m not going to do this anymore, I’m not going to get into these scrums, I’m going to stay away from that stuff.’ He couldn’t help himself because there’s a little punk in Crosby. He’s not the perfect gentleman. He’s not the sweet kid you see in interviews with his hat pulled down over his eyes. I’d say screw him, hit him.”
So after his comments that could easily be taken as sexist, Milbury turns right around and makes fun of Crosby’s concussion issues this season, while referring to the best player in the NHL as a “little punk”. Nice.
The question, at least for me, is when is Milbury going to make a comment so off color that it’s going to cost him his job? When does NBC take a look in the mirror and decide, “Hey, this guy might be bad for business.”?
What exactly does Milbury bring to the table as analyst? It’s not much. The amount of time he spends spewing a bunch of garbage could be put to much better use getting someone who actually educates fans about the game in there. Even Roenick isn’t without his own interesting personality in there, but at least he breaks down the game as good as anyone out there.
I’d imagine it would have to be soon that NBC at least evaluates whether or not Milbury deserves a spot on the squad on a nightly basis. Between his assaulting children and the fact that he continues to render himself completely useless as an analyst, I just wonder when that time will be.
