NHL Playoffs 2012: Last Night in the East (April 23)
New York Rangers 3 vs. Ottawa Senators 2 (Series Tied 3-3)
The New York Rangers fought to live another day in this series of the NHL Playoffs 2012 against the Ottawa Senators. These two teams have been pretty evenly matched despite the vast difference in their standings (Rangers #1 seed and Senators #8 seed), so it’s appropriate that the series is going to Game 7.
There was only one goal scored by Ottawa’s Chris Neil on a power play at 7:05 of the first period. Neil, who also received a five minute major for fightning along with New Yorks’ Brandon Prust, has been an unlikely hero in this series. The second period was dominated by the Rangers who racked up three goals including two power play goals scored by Derek Stepan and Brad Richards then an even-strength goal by Chris Kreider in the final minute of the period to take (and ultimately keep) the lead going into the third.
The Senators came up short in the third with a goal credited to Jason Spezza with less than a minute to go in the third period. Rangers goalie, Henrik Lundqvist, argued that there was goalie interference even though the goal was allowed and nothing was called – there was no consequence since the Rangers won, 3-2.
