NHL Playoffs 2012: Last Night in the East (April 26)
New York Rangers 2 vs. Ottawa Senators 1 (Rangers Win Series 4-3)
The New York Rangers against the Ottawa Senators was one of two Game 7′s played last night in the Eastern Conference NHL Playoffs 2012.
It was a low-scoring game that came down to a 1-1 tie needing a single overtime period to decide which team would advance to the next round /Eastern Conference semi-final. So the goalies for both teams were huge factors in the outcome. All goals scored were in the second period of play.
2011-12 Hart Trophy and Vezina finalist (and #1 star of the game), Henrik Lundqvist, was at the top his game from the drop of the puck allowing only one goal in the second period down one man on a power play for the Senators through 60-minutes of play.
The Rangers scored the all-important first goal of the game 4:46 of the second when defenseman Marc Staal ripped a snap-shot off a perfect tape-to-tape pass from captain Ryan Callahan. The second goal of the game also came from New York about five minutes later. Senators captain, Daniel Alfredsson scored on a power play for an opportunity for his team to get back in the game, but it wouldn’t be enough by the end of the third period.
New York will face the #7 seed, Washington Capitals, at home tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM (EST) and will be broadcast on NBC.
New Jersey Devils 2 vs. Florida Panthers 1 Overtime-2 (Devils Win Series 4-3)
The New Jersey Devils and the Florida Panthers were pretty evenly matched in their Game 7 having to play two overtime periods.
The first and the second periods belonged to the Devils with one goal scored in each from rookie and 2012 Calder Cup candidate, Adam Henrique, and Stephen Gionta, respectively.
The third period went the Panthers way also scoring two goals in the period by way of one-man advantages for both from Stephen Weiss and Marcel Goc, respectively.
The contest had to into two overtimes before a winner would be crowned to move onto the next round. The goal was scored 3:47 into the second overtime and Henrique’s second of the game to advance the rookie’s team to the Eastern Conference semi-finals.
