As the 2012 NBA All-Star game approaches and if the Golden State Warriors are serious about making the playoffs, the rumored trade for New Orleans Hornets center Chris Kaman should be made as soon as possible for the Warriors. Starting center Andris Biedrins and backup Ekpe Udoh offer very little offensively and what hurt the Warriors the most at the center position was the season ending injury to Kwame Brown.

Brown in the nine games he played in averaged 6.3 points and 6.3 rebounds. Biedrins who has had his minutes limited for various reasons this season has played in 25 games and is averaging only 2.4 points and 4.6 rebounds and Udoh who has appeared in every game this season is averaging 4 points and 3.5 rebounds.

With the limited offensive production from the center position it’s not surprising the Warriors have been unable to close out games decided by three points or less. The team’s record currently stands at 1-6 in those types of games and one issue has been being able to grab the big rebound, which Kaman would help alleviate.

For example in the Warriors latest defeat against the Memphis Grizzlies in which the Warriors lost by one point. A key rebound was not grabbed after a difficult shot by the Warriors defense was forced and Dorell Wright went to help out on Rudy Gay who attempted the shot. That gave Tony Allen of the Grizzles plenty of room to rebound the miss and put the ball into the basket for the game winning shot.

Interestingly enough when the Warriors played the Phoenix Suns on ESPN there was a discussion on what the Warriors would need to become a playoff team. Part of that discussion was on if the Warriors backcourt of Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis can coexist. That answer has been proven over the past two seasons the combination of Curry and Ellis has been the most productive backcourt in the NBA.

Also, discussed was what it would mean for the Warriors to have a center down in the post. By acquiring Kaman it would take the pressure off Ellis and Curry and with Kaman the Warriors would have a center that would let the team play from the inside out.

David Lee the Warriors starting power forward is not a post-up player, though he can go into the block on occasion. “He is better suited at getting the ball in the high post and can do three things well either find the open man if he’s double teamed, hit the mid-range jumper, or he can drive to the hoop.

In acquiring Kaman the trade would allow for Udoh if he’s not involved in the trade to be sent to the D-League to improve his offensive game and Kaman should benefit the Warriors in situations where a big rebound is needed. Kaman if he is able to come up with the rebound if he is fouled he is an excellent free throw shooter.

The Warriors record at the moment is 11-17 and right now are certainly still in the playoff picture being only 4.5 games back, yet if the Warriors are to make a run the Warriors must pull the trigger and acquire Kaman. Without him the Warriors are going to continue to struggle and eventually will have no shot at the playoffs.
