Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worth, Texas, also known as Hogan’s Alley in honor of the great Ben Hogan, plays host to this week’s top on the PGA Tour with the Crowne Plaza Invitational. The reason Colonial is (one of the courses) known as Hogan’s Alley is due to the tremendous success that was had by its namesake, whereby he won 4 of the first 7 tournaments ever held there.
Colonial has seen its share of drama in recent years, last year notwithstanding, when eventual champion David Toms jumped out to the lead with a first round 62. Toms subsequently followed that blistering first round up with a 74 on Saturday that knocked him out the top position. While playing in the final group on Sunday, he pulled off a beautiful shot which put him in the lead for good, on the par-5 11th hole when he knocked in a wedge shot for eagle.
Despite the fact that the top 3 players in the world are notably absent while they are playing across the pond, the field this week at Colonial is still very strong. 19 of the top 50 players in the world will tee it up this week, with 4 of the top 15 taking their whacks at the oldest course in the Dallas – Ft. Worth area.
While many tracks on the PGA tour have their signature series’ of holes at the middle or end of the course, Colonial imposes itself upon players almost right from the start. Holes 3, 4 and 5 are aptly dubbed the “Horrible Horseshoe” that includes: hole 3 which is a 481 yard dogleg left, hole number 4 which is a monster 247 yard par 3 and number 5, a 481 yard par 4 with trouble on either side of the fairway.
Oddsmakers still seem to be in love with Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler, who are joined by Zach Johnson and last week’s champion Jason Dufner as the odds on favorites to win this week.
