When the dust cleared after Adam Scott’s historic victory at The Masters, some of the attention and recognition began to move to his caddie Steve Williams. As the reports go, Williams urged Scott to aim his putt on the final hole two cups outside of the hole as Scott was only planning on aiming one cup wide. It was the read of Williams on that shot that helped Scott capture the green jacket.
As is generally the nature of the golf caddie, Williams shied away from media coverage after the win, letting the praise get heaped upon Scott. Well, Tiger Woods’ former caddie is not one to shy away from the spotlight for too long. Upon his return home to his native New Zealand a local television station caught up with him as he exited the plane and managed to score a 15 minute interview.
In that interview, Williams expressed how incredible it was for him to be on the bag for Scott’s win, saying “to be part of someone’s dream … to see the emotions that poured out of him on Sunday was just amazing.” He is no stranger to victories, as he was the caddie for Woods for quite some time during his prime. It seems as if this win was perhaps more meaningful for Williams.
Williams didn’t only speak about his current gig with Scott, however. He voiced his opinion about Woods and the controversial drop he took on the 15th hole on Friday. “From what I can gather, he took an illegal drop, signed a scorecard and left the course,” Williams said. “Under most circumstances, that would result in disqualification. … If the Rules of Golf are upheld, I believe he should have been disqualified.”
Now, the falling out between Woods and Williams is well documented. There certainly seems to be no love lost between the two. With that being said, it didn’t seem as if Williams was speaking with any malice, his statement was more matter-of-fact. There were no personal digs taken at Woods, rather Williams was stating his opinion in a very succinct fashion.
I’ll be keeping an eye out to see if Woods has any reaction to the statement made by his former caddie. I definitely won’t be holding my breath, though.
