Green Bay Packers GM Ted Thompson named Sporting News Executive of the Year
Indianapolis – Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson has been named the Executive of the Year by the Sporting News. This is the second time in five years he has won the award, with the last time coming in 2007 after the Packers lost to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship game.
The panel consists of 32 coaches and executives in the NFL who vote on the executive who is most deserving based on team accomplishments and improvements from the previous season. Obviously, it is hard to improve on a team that won a Super Bowl but Thompson was able to do that as Green Bay posted a franchise-best 15-1 record and the number one seed in the NFC. Unfortunately, the Packers lost in the Divisional playoff round to the Giants.
The top four executives with the most votes were Thompson (14), San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke (7), Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith (5) and Cincinnati Bengals president Mike Brown (3).
It is an honor for Thompson to win this award but I am sure if you asked him he would have preferred another Super Bowl ring. There is no doubt he will have his work cut out for him this offseason as the Packers try and get ready to make another deep playoff run, except this time without it ending in disappointment. Green Bay will have the 28th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and several players who will become free agents that they will need to sign in order to ensure another successful season.
Sporting News also previously named Aaron Rodgers as the offensive player of the year. Rodgers and cornerback Charles Woodson were both named to the Sporting News all-pro team.
