Peyton Manning Decision has Many NFL Teams Holding Their Breath
The sport world’s next big “Decision” is looming. On March 8th, the long-awaited showdown between Peyton Manning and Jim Irsay will finally come to a head, in a put up-or-shut up battle royal for the rights Manning’s future. The four-time NFL MVP is due a 28 million-dollar roster bonus on that day, and if cut by the Indianapolis Colts, could quickly become the biggest free agent in NFL history.
The Manning decision will obviously have a huge impact on the Colts, their 2012 draft, and their numerous expiring contracts. Wide receiver Pierre Garcon has already turned down an initial contract extension offer from the Colts, no doubt partially due to what Manning may do in March. Whether or not Irsay will keep or cut Manning will also affect the future of players such as Reggie Wayne, Robert Mathis, and Jeff Saturday. When the 2012 NFL Draft comes around in April, every pick the Colts make (including the number one overall draft pick) will be affected by the ripples of what happens with Manning in March.
Indianapolis is not the only team in the NFL waiting to see what Manning might do. Several other NFL franchises will make choices for their future based on what happens with the Hall of Fame-caliber quarterback. Draft picks, free agents, and trades across the league will all be impacted by what happens with the Colts.
Robert Griffin III had an impressive showing at the NFL Scouting Combine. The Colts seem to be settled on drafting Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the number one overall pick, but that will leave many quarterback-needy teams waiting to either trade up to draft Griffin or to pick up a cut Manning. Teams like Miami, Washington, Cleveland, and even the New York Jets, have expressed interest in one or both quarterbacks. If any of these teams pick up a new franchise quarterback, whether he may be a rookie or a Super Bowl MVP, what will happen to their current starters? What would become of Colt McCoy, Matt Moore, or Mark Sanchez, if there’s a new sheriff in town? Even the Denver Broncos have been rumored to be interested in Manning, or to drafting a rookie quarterback. If John Elway and John Fox decide to pick up Peyton Manning, where will that leave Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow?
Matt Flynn, Green Bay’s backup quarterback, threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a week 17 win over Detroit. Flynn, as well, is drawing a lot of attention from teams that are looking for a new starting quarterback. Today’s NFL is a league where good quarterback play is a top priority, but is also hard to come by. Flynn has gotten interest from teams such as Kansas City and Miami. Flynn’s future as a possible starting quarterback in the NFL will rely heavily on what happens with Manning.
As far as next season goes, nothing is set in stone. Every team is even, with a record of 0-0, up to this point. Still, with so much drama in the off-season and so much talent in the upcoming draft, 2012 looks to be one of the most exciting NFL seasons in recent memory.
