Surprise, surprise!
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay is churning up the NFL rumor pot via Twitter yet again.
“SERIOUS TRADE WINDS Swirling! We’re talking given up high pick for SERIOUS Vet/Starter!.. these deals often crumble n don’t reach completion,” Irsay said on Thursday afternoon.
Translating the often-cryptic Irsay’s message, it appears that the Colts are looking to make a trade for a difference-making starter, even if the price is a first-round pick. Although anyone could be a potential target, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace seems to make a lot of sense.
Especially with wide receivers Austin Collie and Donnie Avery struggling with injuries and the rest of the depth chart behind Reggie Wayne made up of rookies, adding a proven playmaker like Wallace would be a huge boost for rookie quarterback Andrew Luck. It would provide the 2012 No. 1 overall pick with an outstanding deep threat and a target who finds ways to consistently come down with passes.
The Colts’ current offensive coordinator is Bruce Arians, who used to coach Wallace during his days at the same position with the Steelers. That connection could also be helping Irsay find some logic in giving up a high draft pick for Wallace.
Irsay went on to say that Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson “isn’t afraid to roll the dice,” also adding that his checkbook is standing at the ready.
It would certainly take a big offer to get the Steelers to part with Wallace, especially because he’s still under contract and they have the ability to give him the franchise tag next season. However, if the Colts offer a king’s ransom to give their young gunslinger a new toy, it might just be too tempting to pass on.
Leave it to Irsay to get the rumor mill spinning at 100mph.
