Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay promised his fans a trade would go down that would improve their team. People had crazy assumptions this past few days, wondering if the Colts could go real big for a guy like Mike Wallace, Darrelle Revis or even Maurice Jones-Drew.
The Colts went with what would be the best and realistic, and they got a steal. Indianapolis was able to land cornerback Vontae Davis from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a second-round draft pick. A late pick from 2013 or a sixth-round pick could also be involved, depending on Davis’s play.
Davis was a three-year starter for Miami, as the 24-year-old has amassed 148 tackles and nine interceptions for his career. Davis had one of his best seasons last year, recording 43 tackles and four interceptions despite missing four games.
Indianapolis has badly been in need in help for their secondary, which has been a glaring hole in their defense for the past few years. With Davis teaming up with Jerraud Powers, the Colts can have one of the top-cornerback tandems in the league. Along with just getting him for two draft picks, it all works out for Indy. Davis might have his flaws, but he does have a ton of talent.
Davis still has two years remaining on his rookie contract from 2009. He is scheduled to make $957,000 this year along with over $1.1 million in 2013. Although many expected a superstar player, Davis will be making a huge impact for Indianapolis next season and into the foreseeable future.
